Last year Clorox executives reported that about half of U.S. homes use their brand of wipes. Some schools provide them for teachers or request them among back-to-school supplies.
There are pesticides in those wipes… and you do NOT want to be using them.
The truth is, disinfecting wipes are not necessary for routine cleaning. And when they are actually needed – cleaning up after a sick kid or raw chicken on the cutting board – they don’t work unless you use them properly.
While cleaning with those wipes may remove germs from a surface, disinfecting kills them by using antimicrobial pesticides. And it leaves a chemical residue.
Do you have kids suffering from asthma, allergies or any other health issues?
These are disinfectant chemicals that trigger asthma, allergies and other health concerns. Although the EPA monitors pesticides in these products, that is no guarantee of safety..
There are THOUSANDS of ingredients that have been insufficiently tested for health risks.
Believe it or not, some exposure to living bacteria is healthy for us. And overuse of “chemical disinfectants” can lead to “superbugs,” or bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.
THINGS YOU CAN DO:
- Make sure you clean surfaces regularly to remove germs and prevent them from growing or spreading…
- You can use wet paper towels, microfiber cloths and wipes made without disinfectant chemicals (such as diapers wipes) that are all good choices for routine cleaning of hands or hard surfaces.
- Don't use the same wipe on multiple surfaces, such as a counter and a toilet…. that's just gross!
- Throw wipes away immediately after use.
- In the bathroom, tuck away your toilet brush and close the lid while flushing.
- In the kitchen, microwave a wet sponge to make it less hospitable to growing bacteria.
- Wash your hands and your kids' hands with soap and water often.
- Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer on the go (preferably one that includes tea tree oil in it – wink) ;).
WHEN IT'S TIME TO DISINFECT:
There are going to be times with you are going to want to disinfect! Such as surfaces where you handle raw meat, where there are bodily fluids, or your family is getting over a contagious illness, like the flu.
Instead of using Clorox Wipes (or similiar), there are other products out there that DO NOT contain these harsh ingredients.
Using eco-friendly products can kill germs just as effectively… and sometimes BETTER.
For instance, citric acid is extremely effective! Citric acid comes from plants, such as lemons. So make sure you are purchasing botanical cleaners that contain citric acid.
In the disinfectant I use, every drop of citric acid that goes into each bottle takes over 100 hours to process, including 35 hours spent on filtering alone.
DID YOU KNOW:
One single bacteria cell can multiply into over a billion cells in just 24 hours?
Thyme oil is super effective as an immune system – killing microorganisms before they can invade.
The disinfectant I use, they use pure thyme oil because it's so effective!
My family (knock on wood) has not been ravished by the flu bug YET! My husband is a school teacher… yesterday he said 21 teachers called in sick which was a record number…
Compared to previous years, the kids would have been sick at least once by now… but so far, they are healthy!
Are you curious what I'm using?
I'm using something that you can't get in a retail store. If I could, it would probably cost me and arm & a leg… but I'm able to get access to my cleaning products at wholesale cost. And i LOVE that they ship my products in super-concentrated form so all I do as add a little bit to a spray bottle and fill the rest with water!
So in reality, I'm paying LESS than the expensive eco-friendly products at the health food store and as well as the water-filled, chemical-infested products you can get at the store.
